Why go to Egypt?
- Without doubt, towards the top of the premier league in terms of sightseeing destinations, Egypt boasts a land rich in contrasts from Cairo and the ancient glory of the Pyramids, to the modern Red Sea resorts
- Range of reasonably priced, family-friendly hotels
- Shortish flight (Cairo 4hrs, Luxor 5hrs 30mins) and no jet-lag
Things to think about:
- Risk of public disturbances/isolated terrorist incidents - check with Foreign Office before you travel (www.fco.gov.uk/travel)
- Medical treatment can be expensive and standards vary
- Very hot: dehydration often a problem
|
Babygoes2 recommends properties which are suitable for babies or toddlers for a variety of reasons (go to first stop). None of these properties however is 100% child-safe. All of the property descriptions are the opinion of BabyGoes2 and not the individual property owner or tour operator. Prices, while as accurate as possible, are for guidance only. |
| The Dives: |
|
Sharm El Sheikh is undoubtedly one of the world's best diving areas. Ras Mohammed was declared a marine reserve in1983 and became Egypt's first national park in 1989. Inside the park are some of the world's most spectacular coral reef ecosystems. The most ancient of these are fossil reefs dating back some 2 million years.
There are 20 dive sites within the park, including Shark Observatory, Stingray Station and Eel Garden. Also within are a number of wrecks, the Thistlegorm and the Dunraven being probably the most infamous.
The Thistlegorm - This is by far the Sinai's most prized wreck. It was discovered by Jacques Cousteau in the early 1950's. However, its position was not re-discovered until the early 1990's. It was a huge British war ship (approx. 415 feet long) carrying a full consignment of war supplies including tanks, jeeps, guns, bikes, trucks, train engines etc. It was bombed by the Germans in October 1941 causing the ammunition chamber to explode. The Thistlegorm rapidly sunk taking down 9 of the 49 crew members with her. It lies at a depth of 17m to 35m. Although a lot of this wreck has been stripped it is still an amazing dive with guns, bikes, trucks etc. still sitting there like a museum at the bottom of the sea.
This trip is a very early start as it takes approx. 4 hours by boat to get there.
The Dunraven - This was a British vessel carrying a cargo of spices, timber and cotton and went down in 1876 on a voyage from Bombay to Newcastle. It lies upside down on the sea bed and is broken half way along. If entered by the stern at approx. 30 m, you can then swim the entire length of the boat inside to the bow, which is on the reef at 18m. The exit is usually filled with glass fish in their thousands. This dive can be ended by swimming along the reef where you will see lots of sea life.
The Gardens - Near, Middle and Far - The Far Reef is a colourful reef with a slope to 25m. At the top of the drop off are a few pinnacles frequently visited by pelagic. Glass fish caves are in the reef at 12m. Look out for Napoleons, blue spotted stingrays and the odd grey reef shark. The Far Reef is the most popular site in the area for spotting Manta Ray. Middle Reef is an ideal site for having a relaxing cruise over the reef. Sometimes this site can surprise you with the sighting of turtles, whale sharks or mantas.
Woodhouse Reef - This reef is usually dived as a drift dive from south to north. Jumping in at the southern part of the reef is a wall to about 30m. It is worth looking onto the sand patches below to try and spot sleeping sharks. The coral covers all the way from the surface down the wall which becomes more of a slope as the dive progresses. Half way through the dive there is a canyon going along the reef at about 25m which spreads out into a coral garden with sand alleys. This is usually where the current starts to pick up. If the conditions on the west side of the reef are rough the dive has to be ended at the end of the coral garden, which is usually reached after about 50 minutes. If weather conditions allow it is sometimes possible to continue the dive beyond this point. Where the reef leaves the surface and funnels down towards Jackson reef. This area is referred to as the washing machine due to the VERY strong currents going in all directions.
Diving courses are available through Emperor Dive in Sharm el Sheikh.
In Hurghada Family Diving has an arrangement with the Barrakuda Diving Center which is based in The Intercontinental Abu Soma Resort. This is a large PADI training facility and situated at the bottom of the resort close to the beach. It offers a wide range of PADI scuba diving courses, from open water all the way through to instructor development courses.
There are classrooms equipped with full audio/visual training aids and the use of The Intercontinental's pool for confined water training. |

Zamzam Riad in Marrakech Medina (old walled city), Morocco. A holiday for the family who want an adventure. |
| Location: |
|
Marrakech Medina is the ancient walled city. The Medina itself is now a world heritage site. Zamzam boutique hotel is in a riad- a riad has a central garden with plants and it open to the sky. In winter there is a temporary roof to keep the riad warm, but in the summer it is beautifully cool. This ancient riad was a fortune tellers house. It has been lovingly restored, adding the luxuries of a top class boutique hotel – which, unusually for Riads in Marrakech – welcomes children. The riad has a plunge pool and a spa with massage room and hammam. Zamzam is 15 minutes walk from the souks and children adore the vibrancy and sensorial experience of the medina. They love the colours and action in the medina. The riad has good access for taxis and the main road. We are 5 minutes taxi from the new town of Marrakech - Gueliz and close to all restaurants. 10 Minutes taxi to the Palmeraie for camel rides and horse riding. We are 15 minutes walk to Yves Saint Laurent Gardens, where you can pick up a horse and carriage for a tour of the city. Marrakech is 2 hours from the beach.
The beauty of Marrakech and Morocco is that it is a very child-friendly country and the Moroccans adore children. They love to have them in the restaurants and play with them constantly. The owners of Zamzam have a 4year old daughter and being on holiday with her as a baby and having a fantastic time was a major factor in their decision to move to Morocco. |

Why go to South Africa?
South Africa offers something for everyone; its stunning mountains, glorious coastal scenery, rich wildlife spectacles, history and culture makes it a perfect destination for a family holiday. Beaches are plentiful offering exhilarating water sports, swimming, surfing or just relaxing under the warm African sun. There are many family restaurants serving delicious, uniquely South African and international dishes. It's often easy to add on a short safari option to a hotel stay, even if a long safari isn’t possible.
Cape Town: With magnificent Table Mountain as its dramatic backdrop, Cape Town is one of the world's most beautifully sited cities and the gateway to the country. The lovely setting of this cosmopolitan city has always ensured great appeal but recent development around the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront has created a very fashionable destination. Just 45 minutes drive away are the mountains and valleys of the Winelands with their gracious Cape Dutch homesteads, cask-lined cellars and pretty villages with renowned restaurants and fine country house hotels.
Garden Route: Travelling east along the southern coast from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, is the famous Garden Route, a spectacular stretch of forest, lagoon and lake with delightful coastal towns. There are some wonderful hotels in this area including the Kurland which is perfect for a luxury family holiday.
Safaris: For family friendly Safaris we recommend the malaria-free areas of The Eastern Cape, the Western Cape, the Northern Cape and parts of the Northwest Province. Of these, the best game viewing is Addo in the Eastern Cape, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in the Northern Cape and Madikwe and Pilanesberg in the Northwest. These Safari holidays have become ever more child friendly with excellent tours for children (most have age limits) and brilliant babysitting facilities and planned activities for younger children who need to stay at the accommodation. Please visit our Safari section below for full details of each lodge's different activities for children.
When to go:
South Africa enjoys a temperate and pleasant climate, with lovely warm sunny days most of the year. The seasons of the southern hemisphere are opposite to those in the northern hemisphere so South African summers run from November to February, when most of the country is characterised by hot weather with afternoon thunderstorms. Winters are generally mild and dry. South Africa enjoys one of the world's highest average daily hours of sunshine - 8.5 compared with 3.8 in London. One of the best times to enjoy a combination of “beach and bush” is after the mad holiday rush of December and January. February and March are glorious months to make the most of a memorable family holiday. Game viewing (Safari) in the non malaria areas is good year round.
Places to Visit with Children:
Two Oceans Aquarium at V&A Waterfront; View more than 3000 animals from the ocean depths.
Ratanga Junction; More than 30 attractions including 24 rides ranging from Kids’ Rides to Family Rides and Thrill Rides, Snake Shows and Bird Shows.
Mineral World & Scratch Patch; in Simons Town, kids love to scratch for their favourite gems. This visit can be combined with an excursion to Boulders Beach to view the thriving colony of African Penguins.
Warrior Toy Museum; also in Simon’s Town this museum includes a huge display of toys, dolls, Meccano model cars, boats, trains and other toys.
Butterfly World; Butterfly World is the largest free-flying park for butterflies in Southern Africa, lying at the junction of the main wine routes of Stellenbosch and Paarl.
World of Birds & Monkey Park; largest bird park in Africa in tropically landscaped hills in the Hout Bay valley. Visitors are able to walk through the aviaries.
Winelands Tour; whilst the parents may enjoy a relaxed wine tasting session at one of the famous wine estates, the kids can be taken on walks of the estate or other attractions of the area. Chocolate Tasting; in Franschoek at Huguenot Fine Chocolates. This can be incorporated into a Winelands tour.
Monkeyland; an eco-adventure tourist driven free-roaming multi-species primate sanctuary in the Plettenberg Bay area. Offer educational tours & guided monkey safari.
Hanging Bridge over Storm’s River Mouth; in the Tsitsikamma National Park, a 15 min walk through the forest takes you to this magnificent hanging bridge – great fun for the kids.
uShaka Marine World; in Durban, includes an aquarium, freshwater amusement park, uShaka beach and a shopping precinct.
Maropeng Centre; in the Cradle of Humankind (close to Johannesburg), is an informative underground visitor attraction, with boat rides, interactive exhibits and audio visual displays.
Things to think about:
- Long flight: Cape Town (11 hours 35 mins), Johannesburg (11 hours 50mins) but only a two hour time difference.
- It can be VERY hot.
- A lot of safari options are only open to older children (over-eights). Please use our guide below for full details of which option suits your family best.
- Health risks: consult your GP before you book to discuss vaccinations etc.
Costs:
Expect to pay in the region of £2000 per adult for 7 nights in one of the better child friendly hotels and for an organised Safari. These rates include flights and various meal plans. Discounts are generally available for children. Villa accommodation starts at £900 per adult for 7 nights including flights.

Villa Plato, Plettenberg Bay |
| Location: |
|
Beautiful Plettenberg Bay is the most fashionable destination on South Africa’s Garden Route. With fabulous beaches which stretch for miles, golf courses, surfing, hiking, dolphin and whale watching, it is not surprising it is so popular.
Step out of your front door, over the old beachfront road onto the lagoon beach, and you’re in the Keurbooms River nature reserve, perfect for picnics or ferry trips. Or walk another 5 minutes to where the river meets the warm Indian Ocean. With the background of the Tsitsikamma Mountains, you will know why the first sailors named it Bahia Formosa, the ‘beautiful bay’. |

Rocktail Bay, Maputaland Marine Reserve, South Africa |
| Location: |
|
Situated in northern Natal, within the Maputaland Coastal Forest Reserve and adjoining the Maputaland Marine Reserve, is Rocktail Bay Lodge. The lodge and its chalets on stilts are among the fringe of trees, just behind a row of sand dunes. The beach is a five-minute stroll. This lodge lies within a proclaimed World Heritage Site and offers a fantastically private beach experience set in 40 kilometres of unspoilt, undeveloped and pristine coastline. The chalets were built by the KwaZulu-Natal Bureau of Natural Resources in 1991 and were designed to be as ecologically friendly as possible.
This remote stretch of coast is the breeding ground of The Leatherback and the Smaller Loggerhead Turtle. Each summer the giant turtles haul themselves from the surf and slog up the sloping sands to excavate nests and lay their eggs. Two months later hundreds of tiny turtles hatch out and begin their scramble to the shelter of the waves. The Snake-Eyed Skinks of Black Rock are the only ones of their kind in the world. Keep your eye on the sea, too, and you may catch a glimpse of a Humpback whale or dolphin. This is not "Big Game" country, although the bay has its own "Big Five": Leatherback Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, Palmnut Vulture, Buitons Skink and Zululand Cycad. The area has 2 interesting antelope species: Common Reedbuck in marshes and grasslands and Red Duiker in forest patches. Hippos are found in freshwater lakes. Whales and Dolphins are seen off shore. Birding is good and a number of rare coastal species can be found: Green Twinspot, Green Coucal, Grey Waxbill, Purplecrested and Livingstone's Louries, Natal Robin and jewel-like Emerald Cuckoo in forests, and Pinkthroated Longclaw and Rufousbellied Heron in marshy areas. |
| Accommodation: |
|
10 wood and thatch "treehouse" chalets and a Family Room are raised up on stilts into the forest canopy. Each has a wooden deck and private facilities. The chalets have en-suite showers and toilet facilities and an outdoor shower. 20 guests can be accommodated comfortably. A short boardwalk leads to a thatched dining room and bar-lounge and comfortable lounge area. Dine inside or under the giant mahogany trees. |
| Activities: |
|
The highlight here is the miles of pristine and undeveloped coastline. In addition to enjoying the clean golden beaches, a variety of guided activities are available. The Indian Ocean is ideal for snorkeling in search of tropical fish (flippers and snorkels may be borrowed at the lodge), while surf and fly fishing is among the best on the east coast. Nature walks through the coastal forest and grasslands, or drives in open 4x4 vehicles to Black Rock and other localities will enthrall naturalists and photographers. In summer, nocturnal walks and drives along the beach in search of egg laying sea turtles are a highlight. Scuba diving is available off shore (at extra cost). There is a new scuba operation here - the only private operation in coral areas in the whole of South Africa. There is also a swimming pool and sundeck for those who want to relax around the lodge. Other attractions include: birding, horse riding, and fly-in beach. |
| Children's activities: |
|
Rocktail Bay offers the following specialist activities and provisions for children:
- Classic family beach holiday with a fun-filled educational aspect
- 40 kms of coastline for children to dig in with buckets and spades, safe snorkelling and stargazing

- Oct to Dec: Children can accompany parents to see Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles as they make their way up the beach to lay their eggs

One of Kommetjie's oldest houses, Beach Party looks directly out to sea and is an ideal property for those with younger children. Kommetjie shops are a short walk and there is a larger supermarket 10-minutes drive away at Sun Valley. Theres plenty to do nearby: camels, horses, a wildlife park, the warmer waters of beaches at Boulders (with its own penguin colony), Seaforth and Fish Hoek. There's a shipwreck on the beach which stretches all the way to Noordhoek. Straight out of the gate, and you can be crayfishing and playing in the rockpools. Real on the beach stuff. Not luxurious, but back to nature and great fun for little ones. |

| Safari
Tips: Adventure holidays safaris, walks etc
Whilst not an obvious choice for those travelling with small children, we know that there are plenty of intrepid travellers out there that are looking for something a bit different, who are prepared to do a bit more and go a bit further to find it.
We’ve found some excellent ways of enjoying a safari with your under-fives, even though most companies recommend safaris are best suited to the over 8’s.
It’s our view that it’s entirely possible to take your baby anywhere with sufficient planning, but we do recognise that more adventurous holidays need a little more forethought than a week in Cornwall. Here's our summary of things to consider:
- during walks and safaris shade will be severely limited. Ensure you have excellent UV protective hats and other clothing where possible, and use copious amounts of sun block at all times
- De-hydration will be a bigger worry than ever, so take a LOT of cooled boiled water and make sure that your small person drinks it regularly
- Take all necessary vaccination precautions: check http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/travel/vaccines_index.shtml and remember that safari locations are often in malaria zones, so choose carefully
- Take plenty of anti-mosquito protection – nets, deet-free repellent etc and use liberally. Keep children covered in long sleeved / legged clothing from dusk onwards
- Be realistic – if you’re going on a walking holiday with a baby in a back carrier, then think carefully about adequate shade protection, or consider walking in cooler climates. If you’re walking with a toddler think about how much walking they will actually be able to do. Buggies may be provided but how easy will they be to push, and just how bored will your toddler get? Remember, amazing scenery is not at the top of most toddlers must-have list….so plan distractions. If you’re on safari toddlers will be excited but will they be able to keep quiet at crucial times? What about the early mornings and late evenings?
- Consider a combination holiday, where you have some adventure such as walking or safari with more traditional holiday pursuits, or a villa holiday close to wildlife excursions.

Pafuri camp, Safari Lodge, Kruger National Park |
| Location: |
|
Pafuri Camp is a Kruger Park private safari lodge situated between the Limpopo and the Luvuvhu Rivers in the northern sector of the Kruger National Park, in a 24 000-hectare area, called the Pafuri or the Makuleke. This remote area is uncrowded and unspoilt with spectacular scenery, including the lovely Lanner Gorge. The area is the ancestral home of the Makuleke people, and is one of the most diverse and scenically attractive areas in the Kruger National Park.
Large herds of elephant and buffalo concentrate in and around the permanent waters of the Luvuvhu River in the dry winter months. There are also resident prides of lion and a healthy population of leopard. This is one of the few places in the Kruger where you have a good chance of spotting Eland and Sharpe's Grysbok, and is one of the top birding locations in South Africa. One of the unusual aspects of this area is its palaeo-anthropological history, with evidence of early human ancestors stretching back some 2 million years ago through the Stone Age and into the Iron Age. The Tulamela dynasty, the original rulers of this area, constructed walls and other structures that are not dissimilar to those found at Great Zimbabwe. There are also rock engravings, hand tools and maybe even burial grounds to be found.
Brilliant birding:if you're a twitcher, you'll love Pafuri, where you will see some of South Africa's most beautiful and rarest birds, including the Carmine Bee-Eater, Pel's Fishing Owl, Saddle-Billed Stork and a huge variety of raptors.

Game Drive The best time for game drives is first thing in the morning, and early evening as animals tend to be more active at these times of the day. Game drives are conducted in the latest Land Rovers, with a maximum of 6 guests per vehicle. We will try and give families their own vehicle depending on availability.
Star Gazing Thanda's rangers are knowledgeable in this field, and star gazing can be enjoyed during evening game drives.
Bush Breakfast Served in a secluded spot in the heart of the bush - but rangers will keep an eye out for the wilder inhabitants of Thanda!
Bush Dinner Get close to nature and enjoy a decadent African bush dinner lit by paraffin lamps and candlelight.
Bush Walk Thanda's game rangers, field guides and trackers have a vast knowledge not only of the fauna, but the flora too. During bush walks, guests can have the opportunity to learn about all the fascinating uses of the plants in the area, and to identify spoor. On request, guests can track animals with specially trained rangers.
Night Walk Ideally done when the full moon provides enough light to walk without the assistance of torches or lamps. Highly recommended for those who are more adventurous at heart.
Wildlife Lectures / Junior Ranger Program Guests interested in specific topics related to wildlife and conservation will enjoy the wildlife lectures given by the senior rangers and field guides. Thanda's younger guests can participate in the Junior Ranger Program, a wonderful introduction to the bush |

Our guides
The Adventurers' Club benefits from one of the finest guiding pedigrees in all of Africa. Our head naturalists include: Tom Lmakiya Lesarge, one of Kenya's best-known cultural authorities, who is currently writing a book of African children's folktales; Sammy Maende, a marine conservationist with long experience running coastal conservation programmes; Daniel Kilonzo, a professional Kamba guide as famous for his humour as his award-winning bird knowledge; and John ole Kerore, Kenya's most experienced and popular Maasai children's guide. Each naturalist is assisted by a highly trained children's animator, who is responsible for the care and wellbeing of all younger Adventurers. Most of our animators have worked as kindergarten teachers, and all have considerable experience looking after young children. In addition, all Adventurers staff have undergone specialist first aid training, and most speak at least two European languages.

Young Ranger Club
Heritage Hotels' Young Rangers' Club offers a unique opportunity for older children to get 'up close and personal' with the African wilderness, learning its wild ways from some of the continent's most qualified guides, and taking part in vital community and conservation initiatives in some of the world's last great wild places. The 'big brother' of Heritage's renowned Adventurers' Club, the Young Rangers' Club is available to 12-17 year olds at four safari properties - in the world-famous Maasai Mara game reserve, the wilds of Tsavo West, the northern deserts of Samburu, and the lush 'Happy Valley' of Lake Naivasha.
Activities
The Young Rangers' Club is available to all children aged between 12 and 17 who are visiting Heritage Hotels with their families. By providing Rangers with a comprehensive programme of conservation education, community interaction and practical 'bush skills', the Club aims to help children to appreciate the importance of Africa's wilderness and tribal cultures - and the need to preserve both for future generations.
Rangers' courses are usually staged over three or four days, with an established itinerary of interrelated activities. After each day in the bush, Rangers spend the evenings discussing their day's 'findings' with local naturalists and community members, watching documentary programmes, or undertaking special nighttime activities, such as stargazing or nocturnal animal spotting. Special fly-camping expeditions are also available to the Loita Hills in Maasailand or to the summit of the Samburus' sacred Mount Ololokwe - where Rangers are guaranteed even loftier heights of cultural awareness!
Here are just a few of the many activities presented by the Young Rangers' Club:
Bush Orienteering
The Rangers are divided into groups and learn to find their way through the bush using traditional methods (sun and stars), compasses and watches, as well as high-tech Global Positioning Systems equipment.
First Aid
Rangers are presented with practical lessons on how to treat and administer to shocks, snakebites, bleeding, circulation problems, and other debilitating conditions.
Snakes
Everyone is both intrigued and afraid of snakes, and our lectures on identifying different snakes, the properties of venom, and the treatment of snakebites are invariably one of the Club's highlights!
Bird Identification
Through a variety of lessons and bush walks, our avian experts help Rangers to learn how to identify African birds through their calls, bills, feet, habitats and plumage patterns.
Tree Identification
Through a similar variety of face-to-face encounters, Rangers learn how to identify various key tree species, their importance and roles in their environment, and their local and medicinal uses. The activity often ends with a 'tree marathon' contest, through which Rangers try to identify as many trees as possible in a given time.
Mammal Behaviour Studies
At the beginning of the Rangers' courses, each Ranger chooses a specific mammal to collect data on during their game drives and bush walks. Data is collected at specific times to ensure a comprehensive understanding of behaviour patterns. At the end of their stay, each Ranger is invited to give a short presentation on the data they have collected.
Guided Bush Walks
All the Rangers' Club properties are ideally located for safe and illuminating walks through a variety of bush, forest and mountain habitats. These walks offer an ideal way of getting close to nature, studying local flora, small mammals, reptiles, birds and insects, identifying larger mammals through their spoor, and finding water in the bush.
Animal Obstacle Course
Siana Springs Intrepids is equipped with a unique 'Animal Obstacle Course', which enables Rangers to mimic and study the movements and hunting techniques of 10 different animals, including lions, leopards, elephants and baboons. After imitating the movements of each animal, the Rangers are taught the scientific rationale behind them.
