| Location: |
|
One of the first of its kind La Cour aux Bourgeois is a magical place that not only welcomes babies and toddlers but positively celebrates them. Sarah and Laurent Caille, the Anglo-French owners of this beautiful 17th century farmhouse, have been dedicated to helping young families plan and enjoy the most stress-free holiday possible since 2003 and guarantee a relaxed and safe family environment by only accepting reservations from families with at least one child under 5yrs old (see our two location reports for in-depth independent reviews).
The property is situated in the traditional village of Villers Canivet where you can enjoy a morning stroll to pick up your freshly baked bread and croissants and it’s just a five minute drive to the town of Falaise where you will find a hypermarket, shops, restaurants, banks and medical facilities – the best of the French countryside without feeling cut off. It is an easy 30 minute drive to the coast and 20 minutes to the main city of Caen.
The region is packed with activities for families and you can use their unique Tried and Tested directory with reviews from previous families to help plan your days out. The most often repeated feedback is a week simply isn’t long enough to fit it all in – probably one of the reasons so many of their guests return year after year.

La Cour aux Bourgeois is everything you expect and more from a 300yr old farmhouse: exposed stone walls, beamed ceilings and floor to ceiling fireplaces are packed full of character and it has been lovingly renovated and equipped with enormous attention to detail.
The property is situated in approximately three acres of land with the three gîtes and playbarn arranged around a beautiful central grassed courtyard. Each gîte has a different layout: the smallest has been conceived specifically for a couple with a baby and/or toddler and the largest is perfect for a larger family or additional grandparents. You can even take over the whole property if your group is large enough!
The gîtes have been decorated in an eclectic mix of French and English country styles to create a very stylish yet comfortable and family-friendly atmosphere designed to meet the needs of children and discerning parents alike. They are equipped with all the necessary baby and toddler equipment including pushchairs, monitors, blackout blinds, sterilisers etc. and all the usual home comforts including WIFI, satellite TV, library of DVDs and free-to-use washing machine - you really only need to pack a few clothes and the rest is taken care of.
|
| For parents: |
|
The attention to detail here is second to none and everything has been set up to make travelling with young children as easy as possible. You don’t need to pack any of the usual baby paraphernalia and in addition to the fantastically well-appointed accommodation you can make use of the pre-arrival shopping service, a meal delivery service from a local gastronomic restaurant, baby-sitting, pampering services and even French conversation classes. The owners offer an unobtrusive yet very personal service and are happy to help out with anything you may need. |
| For children: |
|
A toybox in every gîte, Cbeebies, a DVD library and play areas you’ll find it difficult to drag the kids away from. The playbarn includes a 12ft trampoline, soft play area, ride-on toys and climbing frame – the perfect venue to entertain early risers whilst at least one of you gets a lie-in. Behind the playbarn, set in the orchard, is an enclosed outdoor play area including wooden play equipment and giant sandpit with permanent sunshade. |

If you have ever fantasised about upping sticks and living in France then this is the place to come and live the dream – even if it’s only for a week or so. 4 rue de la Dive is an eighteenth century manoir set in 17 hectares of land that has been lovingly and authentically restored. Featured in House Beautiful magazine, it offers a magnificent holiday retreat where you can while away hours in the pool or on the tennis court, stroll through the grounds and feed the animals or amble into town, basket in hand, across the footpaths through the fields.
The Coach House is suitable for a family or group up to eight members (max. five adults) and caters perfectly for babies, toddlers and older children. Set apart from the main house, the spacious accommodation offers 4 bedrooms over three floors with a magnificent 15ft arched window flooding the main living area with light. There is a separate dining room leading onto the private patio and enclosed courtyard and a large separate kitchen with all amenities. An integral part of the accommodation is a large playroom equipped with toys, creative play, books and puzzles which is for the private use of Coach House guests. La Ferme de Longues, Longues-sur-Mer, Lower Normandy www.toddlerholiday.com. Telephone Sarah Caille on 0033 677 407047. email : info@toddlerholiday.com |
| Location: |
|
Set in the coastal village of Longues-sur-Mer, La Ferme de Longues was a working farm until September 2008 and after extensive renovations now offers a cluster of three rustic gîtes within walking distance of the sea (1km). Longues-sur-Mer is the ideal combination of coast and countryside. It is a traditional French village, not a resort, offering easy access to the sea with the space and calm of the countryside. Ideally situated between the pretty port of Port-en-Bessin and the historic town of Arromanches (both 5 minutes by car) there are shops and good restaurants within easy reach and the historic city of Bayeux is only 8km away. The local beach is a pebble cove and there are miles of unspoilt sandy beaches within a few minutes drive. |
| Accommodation: |
|
Set in 3.5 hectares the three gîtes and grounds have been converted from former farm buildings dating back to the early nineteenth century. The gîtes have between 2 and 4 bedrooms each with a dedicated nursery and have been renovated to a very high standard featuring a combination of contemporary French design and rustic chic. Each gîte has a private patio and grassed area to enjoy easy al fresco dining and there are communal indoor and outdoor play areas where the children can play safely and meet new playmates.
The former barn has been converted into a toddler’s play paradise including trampoline and ride-ons and behind the barn the former walled potager has been transformed into a securely enclosed outdoor play area with swingset and sandpit for the kids and sun loungers and hammocks for parents. Surrounding the potager is a paddock offering plenty of space for outdoor games and picnics with beautiful views across the rolling fields to Bayeux.
A short stroll will get you to the local store for groceries and a bakery serving fresh morning croissants. There is a good restaurant in the village and best of all you can be admiring the fantastic sea views less than 1 km away on foot. Blow those cobwebs away with a walk (or jog!) along the dramatic coastal path all the way to Port-en-Bessin or Arromanches. Alternatively take the winding road down to the pebble cove - a hidden treasure with plenty of scope for rock-pooling and crabbing.
