Gozo, Malta
Travel with: Family Diving, www.familydiving.co.uk
Stay: Gozo, Malta
Location: Gozo, meaning 'joy' in Castillian, is the second largest island of the Maltese archipelago that consists of three islands known as Gozo, Comino and mainland Malta. Roughly circular in shape, 14km by 7km in area, Gozo is hilly and from the south-west to the north-west, the coast is entirely surrounded by cliffs. Gozo is tranquil and treasures its peace. The island is well served by restaurants, where the eating is good and varied. Virtually all the locals speak English.
Accommodation: Traditional farmhouses, villas, apartments and hotels. The farmhouses are built or converted in traditional style, all with a private pool and some with lovely country or sea views in a selection of Gozo's villages. Villas are also very comfortable with their own private pool. Both farmhouses and villas are fully equipped for self-catering and sleep from two to eight people in two to four bedrooms. All have garden furniture and sun loungers. Some come with dishwasher and washing machines. Also available are a range of 2, 3 or 4 bedroom self-catering apartments in the lovely old fishing village of Xlendi. There is a food arrival pack and a light cleaning maid service is included in the price. Hotel accommodation is also available on request.
The Dives: Gozo dives provide fantastic arches, tunnels, wrecks, caves and lagoons to explore making for some fantastic underwater landscapes. Gozo offers divers plentiful sightings of groupers, amberjack, bream, wrasse, squid, flying fish, sting rays, barracuda, eagle rays and nudibranchs. The occasional sightings of dolphin, sharks, tuna and sea horses can also add to the excitement. Some of the dive sites around Gozo.

The Blue Hole Probably the most famous of Gozo's dive sites, is the Blue Hole. From the surface it looks like an isolated pool of clear blue water, underneath revealing a large archway opening into the open sea and underneath the Azure Window. It is surrounded by breathtaking rock formations, caves and drop-off points. The average depth is 20-30 meters.
San Dimitri Point This dive is only accessible by boat and is a beautiful dive right beneath breathtaking steep cliffs. Large shoals of barracuda are often seen here. The visibility in this area is usually excellent. Average depth around 30 meters.
Billinghurst Cave This cave is an air-trapped cave on the north coast. The entry can be done from a 2-3 meter jump right above the cave entrance, subject to weather conditions. A long tunnel (some 40/50 meters) leads to the cave where you are able to surface. Average depth around 25 meters.
Double Arches The Double Arches is the formation of two holes through a vertical rock face. The top of Double Arch reef is about 18 meters and keeps going down easily to about 40 meters.

Diving courses are available through Moby Dives a PADI 5 Star IDC training facility.
