Peebles Hotel Hydro, Peebles, Scotland
(www.peebleshydro.com)
| Location: |
Voted Scotland’s top family hotel of 2006-7, Peebles Hydro has long earned a reputation for being particularly child-friendly. Dating back to 1881, the 129-bedroom hotel in the beautiful Scottish Borders is one of the country’s oldest and grandest hotels but is a firm favourite with youngsters and their parents. It is owned and operated by McMillan Hotels - itself a family firm - and is a very popular destination for short breaks. Ship ahoy! The luxury ferries between Stranraer and Belfast set sail only a few hundred metres away. Stranraer is the ideal place from which to explore the area which includes sub-tropical gardens, quiet beaches and the Mull of Galloway, Scotland's most southerly point. |
| Accommodation: |
73 bedrooms and suites, all with ensuite facilities, equipped to the highest standards, many with views over the harbour and loch beyond. |
| Facilities: |
The four star Hydro’s facilities include a 20-metre indoor swimming pool with separate toddlers’ pool, sauna, steam room, whirlpool, a children’s activity centre in its 30 acres of wooded grounds, indoor play areas, games room, putting green, pitch and putt course, and tennis courts. Riding stables are located nearby. Mums and dads can also relax in the hotel’s health and beauty salons which offer a wide range of treatments.
The hotel has won a series of awards for its food. Its all-day restaurant Lazels was the first hotel restaurant in Scotland to achieve the new Healthyliving Award launched by the Scottish Consumer Council and Scottish Executive. This gives national recognition to caterers and the food service sector which take steps to provide healthier options by reducing levels of fat, salt and sugar in food and making fruit and vegetables more easily available.
The children's menu is particularly impressive, offering dishes which are healthy yet appealing. |
| For children: |
The Hydro treats children as honoured guests. Youngsters are just as important as their mums, dads, grandparents and guardians. Hydro staff go out of their way to make each child feel special. During school holidays it organises extensive supervised programmes of activities for children who also have their own colourful dining room. In the evenings, hostesses look after kids while their parents enjoy dinner in the hotel’s chandeliered dining room which looks out over the rolling Peeblesshire hills. It has 24 family rooms with accommodation for adults linked to children’s rooms, some with bunk beds. |
| Price guide: |
Dinner, bed and breakfast from £56 per person per night. Free bed and breakfast for children when sharing one of the large rooms with two adults on dinner, bed and breakfast. During Christmas, New Year and weekend breaks children up to 4 years are charged 25% of adult rate, and 5-15 years 50% of adult rate when sharing with two adults.
