Why go to the USA?
The USA offers an incredible variety of cultures, geography, cities, climates . There are great city breaks such as New York, Boston, LA, San Francisco, Chicago. Excellent warm weather holiday destinations - California, Florida, the Carolinas, Arizona, Hawaii. Exceptional National Parks and world famous natural wonders such as the Grand Canyon, the deserts, the mountain ranges, the waterfalls. Just about everyone has their own favourite American dream, so we’ll confine ourselves to good reasons to visit the USA with a baby or toddler:
  • The service culture means that everyone is always very helpful
  • Standard of accommodation is mostly very high
  • Common language ease of communication
  • Restaurants are generally very informal and geared to kids, with special menus
  • Beach resorts usually have a lot of facilities on offer and are well equipped
  • Good medical facilities (but don’t forget the insurance!)
  • Great shopping bargains
  • Plenty of distraction activities - theme parks, cinemas, bowling....

Disneyland and world are obvious attractions for those with young children, but it’s relatively easy to find information about them (try Virgin Holidays 01293 617181), and it’s debatable whether adults will enjoy the kind of relaxing break we’re trying to find for them at the same time....so, we’ve tried to unearth a few slightly more unusual locations for you (some of which can be combined with a Disney stay if you like).

(for more details...)

Babygoes2 recommends properties which are suitable for babies or toddlers for a variety of reasons (go to first stop). None of these properties however is 100% child-safe. All of the property descriptions are the opinion of BabyGoes2 and not the individual property owner or tour operator. Prices, while as accurate as possible, are for guidance only. Something a bit different from Florida - Hilton head is a very ecology conscious, high quality holiday development in the atmospheric deep south. There’s a lot to see in the area, the beaches and wildlife are fantastic, and life in the resort is safe and very easy. Sea Island off the South Carolina Coast. Beautiful beach location, with boat trips to Daufuskie - famous for being the location of the film Prince of Tides. Within easy reach of Charleston and Savannah (famous for location of Forest Gump and Midnight in the Garden of

Good and Evil) - towns drenched in deep south atmosphere and great for walking around. Good shops, restaurants, attractions. Beaufort (real Gone with the Wind territory) is only half an hour away. All developments on the Island have great shopping, restaurant and medical facilities. Each has a reception centre where staff deal with your every query. There are loads of different things to do - mainly involving wildlife or sport. You can take boats out on the inshore waterways and spot lots of amazing birds and fish including dolphins. Boats leave regularly from the marina on dolphin spotting trips, and if your child is big enough you can hire your own skiff and cruise the inland waterways and be befriended by your very own dolphin. It’s not unusual to be able to sit on the beach and watch the sunset and the school of dolphins swimming just off shore. Apart from all this, there are endless golf courses, plenty of tennis, riding and other sports. Wild deer roam freely all round the accommodation, and little ones love to deer spot as they walk to the beach.

Accommodation: There are a variety of high quality residential and hotel developments. Palmetto Dunes for example has a variety of attractive and well equipped clapboard villas for rent(see below).

Beach: The beach is a long wide strip of soft white sand, ideal for walking, playing, relaxing, cycling and patrolled by lifeguards. Despite the development the coastline is carefully conserved. The beaches are backed by nothing more than dunes and sea grass. The sea is warm and shelves gently, although there are usually waves rolling in gently.

Travel: Fly either to Hilton head direct or to Savannah (around 9 hours)and change or drive through the dripping moss covered roads to Hilton head (around 2.5 hours).

Capucci Home

Travel with: Find out what they offer
Stay: Capucci Home
Accommodation: Spacious 4 bedroom home in a beautiful wooded position just a few minutes walk from the beach. Private pool with large terrace and outside shower/barbecue. En suites to all bedrooms, all on one level. Air conditioning, satellite TV.
Price guide: One week in May, total £1339 for the whole villa, around £170 each(8 sharing), with flight etc as above - an average weekly cost of £450. Not bad for a week’s luxury in South Carolina! each. Two weeks for around £700
Child-friendliness: The villas and homes often have steps leading from the front door - this is traditional Carolina style, which would bring the usual buggy hassles, but it’s a small price to pay. The air conditioning makes it easy to sleep and there is plenty of space to spread out in the accommodation. Cots and highchairs are available on request, and there may be a small extra charge for this. 2-12 year olds sharing an adult’s room would only pay their flight since the charge is per villa not per head. The climate is relatively humid, and especially so from July to October, which is also hurricane season, full of mosquitoes and best avoided. November - March can be chilly. It’s not the theme park heaven of Florida, but there are plenty of exciting and mainly natural things to do, and that’s part of the attraction for the grown ups.
