Why go walking?
  • Whether it’s a gentle ramble on a day out, or an organized walking holiday, children of all ages – and babies and toddlers in particular - love being outside.
  • Equally, it’s a treat for adults to observe children’s wide-eyed wonder at all that nature has to offer – from bugs (TIP! pack a magnifying bug-catcher, widely available for under a fiver, in your toddler’s backpack), to butterflies, wild flowers and wildlife. It’s also a great way of introducing young citizens to environmental issues!
  • Child-carrier backpacks (try before you buy – look for good head support, secure straps and that it feels comfortable for you) make it easy for parents and fun for babies
  • Most toddlers love the idea of packing their own backpack – include a favourite toys and some of their favourite snacks

Things to think about:

  • Seasoned walkers seem to agree that children under five will walk for around an hour on their own; older children, obviously, will be up for longer walks. Our recommended operator can provide buggies (and even mules!) for toddlers, and back packs for younger children.
  • Babies won’t be expending the same energy as you or toddler walkers, so make sure they’re warm enough.
  • Children require footwear that is lightweight, comfortable and which offers support.
  • As in all trips with young children, be prepared: a bit of planning goes a long way to making the experience more enjoyable for everyone. Pack sufficient water, food and snacks, hats/sunhats, sunscreen and insect repellent, first-aid kit, maps, loo roll, whistles.
  • Don’t be too ambitious – judge your pace, and plan a route with sufficient attractions and rest points.

Babygoes2 recommends properties which are suitable for babies or toddlers for a variety of reasons (go to first stop). None of these properties however is 100% child-safe. All of the property descriptions are the opinion of BabyGoes2 and not the individual property owner or tour operator. Prices, while as accurate as possible, are for guidance only. Walks worldwide
Travel with: Walks Worldwide (www.walksworldwide.com)
Walks Worldwide specialise in walking holidays in destinations around the world. The tours devised for families vary considerably in style. Most departures coincide with UK school holidays although the variety of regional dates often means they are able to add extra departures according to demand. On these family tours WW focus on maximising flexibility, ensuring children always have a means of transport available should they tire, be it mule, pony, porter, buggy or taxi. WW have negotiated special prices for the children with the airlines, the local operators and hotels and these discounts are reflected in the tour prices given. In the less developed countries WW will take stringent measures to ensure that hygiene is of a very high standard, although they cannot accept responsibility for any illness. Ultimately parents will be responsible for the personal hygiene and health of their own children. If you have a large family WW would be delighted to organise a special departure tailor-made to your requirements. Here are just a few of the many family adventures WW can offer...
France:
Summer in the French Alps
This trips aims to bring together families on a walking and adventure holiday in the relaxed atmosphere of the French Alps. The chalet is a converted 18th Century farmhouse below the ski resort of Les Arcs. It has nine separate rooms (each with en-suite facilities), a spacious dining room and a separate living room. Outside there is a garden with a barbecue, table tennis and chairs for those wishing to soak up the sun. Many guests go to simply enjoy the mountain air and scenery. But for those who are more adventurous (especially those restless children!), the Tarentaise Valley is equipped for every type of summer mountain activity. Mountain biking, white water rafting, rock climbing, paragliding, summer skiing, horse riding and canyoning. So whether you just feel like an afternoon strolling in the woods or a different adventure every day, WW can tailor the week to your needs. A hire car for the week is included in the price so you can explore further a field. Walking - Several local walks, which can be varied depending on the degree of difficulty required. As the village is just below the forest line some are on small wooded trails. Up above the tree line the possibilities are endless with stunning views of glaciers, high peaks and mountain lakes. You can hire an Alpine Guide for the day and take in one of the peaks (e.g. Mont Pourri at 3779m, Savoie's highest peak).

Price guide: adults from £475 pp; children 7-14 from £295; children 2-6 from £195; infants £30. This includes full board accommodation, car hire and many of the activities listed.

The Eastern end of the mountain range is watered by mountain streams and has been farmed since Moorish times with exotic fruit, almonds and olives. It is also boasts some of the remaining truly unspoilt whitewashed villages of Andalucia, where donkeys outnumber cars by two to one and life has remained little changed for hundreds of years. This family holiday gives you the opportunity to see both sides of this little discovered corner of Spain.

Babysitting: A daytime and evening babysitting service will be available at an hourly rate (payable locally).

Price guide: adults from £640 pp; children 7-16 from £475; children 2-6 £350; infants 0-1 £50. This includes flights, airport transfers, full board accommodation, maps and local 'pick up' transport.

The family walk here involves a pleasant combination of walks between, and day-trips from, the lovely villages of Zagoria. There will be an option for the younger children to be transported by car or taxi between the villages if the proposed walk is too long. Main baggage will be taken between the villages so all you have to carry is your personal requirements for the day (and maybe your offspring!). Accommodation comprises hotels, mountain huts and tavernas.

Price guide: Adults from £895pp; children 7-16 £780; children 2-6 £595; infants 0-1 £50. This price includes flights, transfers, baggage transfers, accommodation (mostly on a B&B basis), meals on trek, services of a leader.

Aimed specifically at both adults and children alike it enables families to explore the Annapurna foothills on trails that are not too long or high (max altitude 2400 metres) but that still offer breathtaking mountain views. Passing through traditional villages, rice terraces and ancient forests with ample staff always at hand to assist and if required carry the little ones! The rafting provides stunning scenery and small rapids ensuring enough excitement without the danger.
