Family Diving

Family Diving, www.familydiving.co.uk
Location: The Maldives is situated on the equator in the Indian Ocean, due west of the southern tip of India. The 1200 coral islands that make up the Republic of the Maldives are perhaps the ultimate in tropical paradise. All the islands are surrounded by the finest whist sand beaches and warm crystal blue waters offering an underwater utopia of unparalleled colour and marine life. The majority of the islands are uninhabited, and only 90 have been designated as holiday islands, occupied by one small resort and reached by seaplane or speedboat. This stunning destination is one of the top dive locations and is also perfect for a whole variety of watersports.
Accommodation: We have picked four family-friendly island resorts which are all totally different in character and we have tried to find something here to suit all budgets. With a choice of the resorts offering good childcare for families wanting to go out diving. We have personally visited all the hotels/islands in our portfolio as a family so can comment on all the facilities from first hand experience. We are offering The Conrad Rangali which is situated in the mid-west Ari Atoll, Kanuhura which is situated in the North East Lhaviayani Atoll, Cinnamon Alidhoo which is situated in the Northern tip atoll of Haa Alif and Bandos which is situated in the mid-eastern North Male Atoll.
The Diving: The Maldives has a reputation for some of the best diving in the world and is famous for its large pelagic life i.e. mantas, whale sharks, eagle rays, turtles, reef sharks etc.

There are two distinct seasons – the North East monsoon which runs from December through to April and brings drier conditions. This is considered the Maldivian Summer. It brings a current flow that runs from the North East through the atolls and exits in the South West. This means visibility on the eastern sides of the atolls are excellent throughout the North East Monsoon. Although the visibility is not so good on the western sides of the atolls during this season, you are more likely to come across Manta Rays and Whale Sharks.

The South Monsoon which runs from May through to December shifts the focus on diving to the western sides of the atolls with the current flowing from the south west through the atolls and exiting out to the North East. This means dive sites in the west will have the best visibility and with the cooler waters will attract many shark species closer to the surface. Manta Rays and Whale Sharks will be more likely to be found on the Eastern side of the atolls through this season.
