What are the childcare options?
There is a wide range of different types of childcare which allow you to have anything from an hour to a complete days rest from supervising your little darling/s. This can make all the difference between returning home from the holiday exhausted or refreshed. The type of childcare you choose will depend on both your own child and their personality and age, the destinations and your own preferences of course. You may just be happy to know that provision exists should you need it. On the other hand you may want to be certain that you can guarantee child free hours (or even whole days) for spa treatments, sports, gym, sailing, trips or similar. Babysitting and baby listening are pretty self explanatory (although baby listening can be anything from a human patrol to an off the hook telephone) so here, in a nutshell, are the other types of childcare most frequently featured in our guide.

Operators such as Sunsail, Mark Warner and Powder Byrne offer excellent resort/club type holidays, with plenty of activities and relaxation for parents - click here for review. Their childcare provision is extensive and comprehensive and covers all ages from 6mths to teenagers. You’ll find Clubs open all day for all ages offering good quality supervision, a wide range of activities and good equipment. Babysitting is almost always on offer too. These places will often offer separate meal times and menus too, enabling you to keep dinner a strictly adult affair, secure in the knowledge that someone else is babysitting or that a baby listening service is in operation.
Pros: The childcare is an important feature of the holiday and is imaginative, well organised, staffed and funded.
It’s a very reasonable, if not free, way of getting regular, half or full day childcare, leaving you free to pursue your interests (it’s often free for those over 2 yrs)
Once booked you can use it as little or often as you like, so you still have flexibility
The cons: You usually pre-book a complete package, so if you think your child is a bit too shy or clingy to enjoy much of it, it might be the most expensive hour’s childcare you’ve ever paid for (if they’re under 2, or over, in a few cases). You are also in a Club environment, which isn't to everyone's taste.
Tip: Ratios are strict so places are truly limited, are very popular and early booking is essential.

Creche or Mini Club in hotel |

Hotels all over the world offer excellent crèches and clubs which can usually be booked on an hourly basis - click here for a review of this type of childcare. They range from quite simple areas with toys and supervision to real clubs, with trips and lots of activities. Most clubs start from around age 3, so it's worth checking if anything is available for a younger child. The ones which offer infant childcare or start from 2 yrs are very popular, so early booking is essential. We can always advise, just click here . Standards of equipment can vary, but toddlers almost always welcome the diversion of some different toys or activities, even if it's just for a short while and some of the Clubs which cater for up to teenagers, can be really sophisticated, with dedicated playzones and even farms for camping and fishing! Click here to go straight to our where to go for the best childcare in 2002 special.
Pros: You dont usually have to book ahead, and can be very flexible regarding hours, so you dont have to waste money if they don't enjoy it. Great that its on site, easy to get to and your child knows you are nearby if needed.
Cons: Standards and ratios do vary, and although we have had good reports of all our recommended hotels, expectations do vary, so if you have a particular requirement, check it precisely first.
TIP: If a certain number of hours in the crèche is essential to the enjoyment of your holiday, ask to pre book it.

Creche attached to a group of villas or apartments |

Simply Travel have lead the way with the provision of this excellent service. With this option you stay in a villa or apartment which you choose, and then just take your child to the crèche for either 5 full or half days, which must be pre booked. The standard of care is extremely high and we know of more than one very clingy toddler who has enjoyed 3 half days at the crèche, having never been left with anyone other than mum before. Other operators offer this kind of add-on childcare too, and it is a very popular option.
Pros: The childcare isnt right on top of you, so when you are in your accommodation you dont feel as if youre in the family compound. The full day/half package leaves room for flexibility. Standard of equipment and staff tend to be very high because its treated as a separate concern.
Cons: You do have to travel to it in some cases, so involves a bit of packing up and preparing etc
TIP: Very popular, so book well in advance.

Private nanny |

This is especially popular in the Caribbean, where private nannies can be hired easily on an hourly basis, and work at your property. We can advise on excellent babysitters and nannies in Mallorca and Portugal just click here and request the information
Pros: Excellent way of having a helping hand during the day or for a few hours on the beach. You can be nearby while someone else builds the castles, reads the books, watches the antics etc.
Can be booked on the spot, so a lot of flexibility.
Cons: Could be expensive for full day care (as provided above).
Youd need to try and get the same nanny each time to build up a bit of trust
They wont have lots of equipment, so best to take your own small supply of toys etc.
Babygoes2 has some great recommendations of useful toys to pack in this instance.
TIP: Although they can be booked on the spot, if you think youll need a few hours regularly, its best to advise the tour operator in advance to be sure.

Some tour operators offer a service where they help you arrange a nanny who will accompany you on holiday. The cost is usually around £150per week . You just have to pay for the nanny's travel and ensure there is enough accommodation for them.
Pros: You get full time childcare for a very reasonable cost
Gives you a lot of flexibility
Cons: You or your children may not get on with the nanny.
Shes with you all the time, so you lose a certain amount of privacy
TIP: Again, the nanny wont have a lot of toys or amusements, so take what you can, and be prepared to buy paper, paints, crayon etc when out there.
Babygoes2 has some great recommendations of useful toys to pack in this instance.

Babysitting |

Sometimes just an afternoon or a couple of nights babysitting is all you need, but can be tricky to arrange. Babygoes2 can recommend an excellent nanny and babysitting service which provides visitors with fully-trained and vetted English speaking nannies at locations all over Mallorca.
The nannies (in uniform for ease of recognition), can come to your hotel or villa, day or night and look after your child/ren (from around £5 per hour), while you have a night out (or two!).
To make your break even more relaxing, the agency can supply equipment for your break - including strollers (basic model from £2.40 per day), travel cots (about £17 per week), car seats (birth to 4 years from £4.80 per day), and high chairs. They can even arrange nappy delivery, to arrive at the resort on day of your arrival (infant size 4-8kg around £13 per 100). How's that for taking the strain?

Most hotels wordwide can offer this option, too.

Formal creche childcare for the under 3's, and particularly under 2's, can be hard to find. Most good hotels, some self catering and just about everywhere in the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean can provide good nannies who will look after your children on site for as long as you want, and in many cases will accompany them to the childrens club aimed at older children.
However, if you're looking for good creche care, then we've listed the best places we know to provide well recommended supervision and care, worldwide. You can find all these destinations on the relevant guide pages on babygoes2 - just click on each to go to the descritpion of the resort/property.
